If the backup task is setup as an incremental method backup then incremental files are created based on that original full backup. Full in this context means all data selected for backup. So the golden rule when creating backups is that you create a backup task for each desired backup result and if you want to keep addition copies of those backups at several locations then you need to create an individual task for each location.Īny task created begins with a Full backup. This applies to all backup types, full, incremental, and differential. If one of the backup files is missing then that corrupts the chain of files and renders all of the files made by the task unrecoverable. The issue is that all backup files created from a single task have a dependency on each other. Not even sure what to look for to see if that might be true.

The only solution we think might hold water could be to do with whether the laptop is somehow blocking access to external resources during boot - preventing Acronis from accessing those images. It will only succeed if the image is on a partition on the internal HDD of the Laptop we're trying to restore. Obviously different network adapters in use here.įailure to restore from the external HDD is irrespective of whether we use a USB 3.1, USB C or Thunderbolt 4 connection to the laptop. We get the same error message regardless.īut just be absolutely clear, we've attempted the restore from the NAS via both Wifi and via Cat6 cable. The restore fails from Images on both the NAS and an external HDD - so it cannot be the network connection. The failure is also regardless of whether we try and restore using the Acronis GUI or using Acronis Rescue Media. Hi Steve - many thanks for your response. Hence to need to use and be able to restore from - the NAS and the external HDD.Ĭan anyone point me in the right direction? You might ask why not just use the image on the partition that works - but due to size - I only have room to store one or two incremental copies. I have tried upgrading from TI 2020 to TI 2021. This includes revalidating and then trying in a variety of combinations. I have tried copying/moving this image to the external HDD and the NAS and the backup fails again - with the same message. However, if I try a restore an image from a partition on the HDD on the laptop - it works. The external HDD is functional and is giving no errors when scanned.Ī quick check online doesn't give me an obvious solution. The network location of the NAS are all checked and active. If I try and restore any image from the NAS or the external HDD - the backup fails with the message shown on the attached screengrab/photo.

Next, boot the Acronis Rescue Media along with your backup image storage drive connected to the PC and Recover the backup to the new drive.I have a variety of images from a laptop split between an external HDD, a Synology NAS and 'locally' on a partition on the laptop itself.Īll those images have been validated. Once you have created a full disk backup image of the HDD then the PC should be shutdown, the HDD removed and replaced by a new drive (HDD or SSD).

This is important as the Acronis Rescue Media needs to boot using the same BIOS boot mode as your Windows OS. The first actions here that you need to perform are:Ĭreate the 'Simple' version of the Acronis Rescue Media on a USB stick (min 2GB / max 32GB size).Ĭonfirm the BIOS boot mode used by your PC - do this by running the msinfo32 command from within Windows then look at the BIOS boot mode settings shown in the right side panel - this should be UEFI for most modern PC's, else will show as either Legacy or the make / name of the HDD. If you are concerned over the reliability of the PC while running from the HDD, then you can make the backup using the Acronis bootable Rescue Media instead of from within Windows. The best approach that I can recommend is to make a full disk backup of the suspect HDD with this stored on an external USB drive. If there are problems with your current HDD then please forget about cloning it as you are likely to hit lots of errors in doing so! Robert, welcome to these public User Forums.
